There’s nothing worse than heading to bed early and still waking up in the morning feeling absolutely exhausted. Unfortunately, it’s not just the number of hours you sleep that plays a part in how rested or tired you feel in the morning; The quality of your sleep is vital too. If you want to ensure that you wake up in the morning feeling refreshed, then you need to take a look at your daily life, sleep rituals, and more, as there could be a number of things you need to change. Here are six reasons why you could be waking up tired in the morning.

 

  1. You Sleep With Pets

As painful as it might be to hear, your pets could be the cause of all your trouble. Like children, cats and dogs can disrupt your sleep, as they have very different sleep patterns to you. Because of this, they may pester you to pet them or let them outside to the bathroom. Their fur can also irritate your throat during the night. This means you should consider keeping them off your bed.

 

  1. You Keep Hitting Snooze

Hitting snooze and sleeping a few minutes longer might seem like a good idea, as you’re getting more sleep, but, as I’ve already mentioned, the quantity of sleep isn’t the only factor at play. When you hit snooze, you enter another sleep cycle, meaning that, when your alarm goes off again, you wake up halfway through one. This leaves you feeling even more tired than before.

 

  1. You Have Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a relatively common condition, but it’s one that prevents you from breathing properly throughout the night. This can massively disrupt your sleep, meaning you wake up in the morning tired. Thankfully, you can often resolve this problem, with the most common treatment being sleep apnea surgery. If you think you might have this condition, you should see your doctor.

 

  1. You Only Drink Coffee

Whether you’re a busy college student or an exhausted parent, you can’t rely on coffee to keep you awake all day, every day. Although you can have a cup to perk you up in the morning, you should avoid caffeine completely past 2 pm. This way, it should be completely out of your system by bedtime, so you’re not left tossing and turning when you should be out for the count.

 

  1. You Netflix Before Bed

It’s hard to resist a good binge session before bed, but, if you want to get a good night’s sleep, you need to turn off your television and put your laptop, tablet, and smartphone away. The light from such devices can stimulate your brain and disrupt the levels of melatonin in your body. This makes it much harder to fall asleep or get quality sleep when you eventually do.

 

  1. You Are Feeling Stressed

When you’re stressed, it can be incredibly difficult to get to sleep, which means you wake up exhausted and feeling even more stressed. It’s up to you to break this cycle and do what’s necessary to reduce your stress levels. There are a number of things you could try to do this, including exercising, journaling, speaking about your problems, and meditation.
